GS1 Canada is pleased to provide you with the fall edition of our Food for Thought newsletter. With every edition, we will bring you the latest insights, news and trends impacting the sector and your business.
Starting October 17, cannabis is now legal for recreational use across all provinces of Canada.
To enable traceability across the cannabis supply chain, GS1 Canada has been consulting with provincial cannabis authorities and representatives from the cannabis business community to develop key guidelines on which global standards licensed producers will need to adopt.
Find out more about how GS1 standards are supporting cannabis traceability.
As part of the Healthy Eating Strategy, Health Canada intends to research product information relating to sodium and other nutrients. Health Canada is planning to release draft sodium reduction targets, for consultation, for the retail and foodservice sectors before the end of this year.
As tracking the evolution and ongoing product ingredient and nutrition changes in the Canadian market is an important part of the strategy, Health Canada is requesting access to your product information in ECCnet Registry and ECCnet Item Certification - Nutritional.
To contribute to the better understanding of the food landscape in Canada, publish your ECCnet Registry catalogue to Health Canada.

In today’s omni-channel world, the typical lifecycle of a product has extended significantly. With increasing popularity of online trade channels and re-sellers, there has been global agreement on the need to have a single rule establishing a permanently assigned unique global identification number for all products.
Aligning with existing global best practice and identifying that products can have multiple lifecycles and must maintain traceability throughout all of them, GS1 has been directed to update the Global GTIN Management Standards to ensure traceability across the value chain through unique product identification.
The healthcare sector has been practicing GTIN non-reuse since 2011 and, starting January 1, 2019, no GTINs can be reused, ensuring that product identification is truly unique and persistent in both physical and digital worlds to support today’s omni-channel consumer experiences.
In preparation for this upcoming change to the global standard in January, the terms and conditions applicable to the licensing of GS1 Canada identifiers, such as GTINs and Prefixes, are being updated, and the updated agreement can be found here.
More details on GTIN Non-Reuse can be found here.
