Canadian researcher quantifies ROI of supply chain traceability

Upcoming cannabis regulations

Canadian researcher Dr. Anne Snowdon examined three health systems around the world leading the implementation of global standards in healthcare: Alberta Health Services in Canada, the National Health Service in the UK and Mercy in the US. Her findings show all three organizations experienced significant financial savings through increased supply chain transparency.

Some of Dr. Snowdon’s findings include:

  • A savings of CAD$261.5 million savings over a four-year period for Alberta Health Services, a 700% return on investment.
  • An estimated £1.5 billion in inventory savings alone, across six locations for the NHS.
  • US$55 million saved through better resource management for Mercy, who have implemented global standards in two locations so far
  • 93% of implantable devices within the UK’s NHS can now be accurately tracked to a patient (NHS)

This research shines a light on the urgent need for global standards implementation in Canada. GS1 Canada is leading an initiative to increase adoption of global standards throughout the Healthcare sector through its National Movement: Safer, More Efficient Care Starts With a Simple Scan.
